bioinformatics

Subject Overview

Modern biological research generates vast amounts of data. Managing, structuring and analysing these is challenging. The Informatics platform has excellent skills and experience to help plan experiments, design and execute analyses pipelines and support all steps in the life cycle of research data.

We can consult on bioinformatics-related aspects of projects, directly work within projects or deliver bespoke training to enable other scientists to perform their own analysis. In the latter context, we also run a set of training courses designed to provide PhD students and post docs with entry points to expand their own bioinformatics skills.

Our work is underpinned by an excellent high performance compute infrastructure enabling us to process extensive data sets. We offer support in image processing and a wide range of sequence analysis, including RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, variant calling and genome projects. For the latter, we also provide lab-based support to prepare samples prior to sequencing including high-molecular weight DNA extraction for long read sequencing or cross-linking for Hi-C.

  • Sequence Analysis (RnaSeq, ChIP-Seq, Variant Calling)
  • Genome Projects (incl. HMW DNA extraction)
  • Image Analysis
  • Phylogenetics
  • AI methods
  • Scripting and programming
  • Drone imagery

The platform has substantive expertise in:

  • Managing very large datasets (multiple Terabytes) while managing consistency and metadata.
  • High performance compute infrastructure and storage solutions

Courses

Intro: VirtualBox setup and loading packages
This introduction will explain how to download the Virtual Machine that you need to work on during the following bioinformatics courses. We will discuss the structure of the course, and...
Command Line Shell
This course covers the basic usage of the Linux Command Line Shell. Knowledge of how to interact with the shell is necessary to interact with most high performance computing (HPC)...
RNA SEQ
RNA-Seq allows us to study the gene expression patterns in organisms. Some of the most common applications of RNA-Seq include measuring gene expression levels and gene annotation. This course teaches...
sequence analysis
In the course sequence analysis, I will cover; how to align and map sequences to a reference sequence and how to interactively view the mapped and aligned sequences. I will...
Data and Downloads
Here you will find all the raw data needed to take part in the bioinformatics training courses....
